This big fellow was sunning very near the road, so I carefully stepped from the car and snapped.
I inched my zoomy lens closer, but I stepped a little closer too. I quickly decided that I was going to have to keep it fresh in my mind that these are massively huge creatures capable of biting off my arm – or more – and there was no fence between me and them. A little scary because I easily forget my distance when looking through my lens. Check out his teeth! And I think that eye is following me!
So, this is my alligator macro. I still have all my fingers and toes and this really is close enough, don’t you think?

Macro Monday is easy to play, snap a macro (or any close-up) photo, post it on your blog and come back here and sign MckLinky. Don’t forget to visit each other.

Of course you used a long lens for this guy. Great shots Lisa. You have no idea how fast this sucker could move. Glad he stayed peaceful.
Colleen said,

What an adventure ! Unbelievable here, they are only in a zoo !
Sara Chapman in Seattle, USA said,
Way, WAY close enough. And they move very fast, did you know that? Next time, shoot from the car, and get a longer zoom lens. Sheesh.
Kala said,
They are amazing creatures and those jaws and teeth! You ARE gutsy.
Pamela said,
if you can see the tartar on its teeth, you’re too close.
Birgitta said,
Oh my…! Scary photos from you today Lisa.
Great capture!
Rosie said,
wow if I saw one of those on the road I don’t think I’d be able to hold my camera still enough to get a good photo. You must be used to seeing the odd one of these around your parts Lisa then? Me…………. I think I would have ran the other way.
SquirrelQueen said,
A great shot, I really hope you were using a long lens. Those fellows move very, very fast. Glad to hear you are in one piece.
Vicki said,
Great phot but you are totally nuts!!!
Maia said,
You are a very courageous girl, I thought it is in a zoo. These are unique captures, you don’t have such an opportunity every day. Good that you have all your fingers and they were not even trembling as the photos are very clear.
Dani said,
Good thing you didn’t have a little dog with yah! Seems like they like those more than anything.
Icy BC said,
Oh that is too close, and scary! You’re so brave, Lisa
Jama said,
You’re so brave! I would have run further away and perhaps just zoom in. Unless of course they are in the zoo!
Icy BC said,
Great macro, and close enough for me

Oh, yes, PLENTY close enough, since it’s an alligator! Yikes! I wouldn’t want to get any closer. Well done! They’re quite fascinating up close, aren’t they? The texture of their skin is amazing.

yikes! too close for comfort! literally!
Great [and courageous] shot!
Artlover said,
You look to have been dangerously close. No, it is fortunate that we do not have this kind of animal here in the north. But I think unleashed dogs are more dangerous than crocodiles.
Great captured

Ohhhmagoodness. Lisa this is SO COOL! Thank you for sharing – and I’m glad you still have all your bits attached! I won’t even give you a hard time, I’ve been known to take a macro shot or two of a grizzly while he sat still too. LOL. I do the same thing though, I forget at times to check my REAL distance/closeness to things that can kill me.
Tammie said,
yes it is sometimes easy to forget for a moment that we are close to possible danger. People do it with bears and moose around here. Your photos are wonderful!
gel said,
Lisa, Lisa, Lisa——Amazing and amazing photos, too! What chutzpah you have!
gel said,
**I just googled alligators and safety. I hope you were using a zoom, because someone else warned you in this thread. I just lost the quote, but they firmly warned that gators can suddenly jump as much as 6 ft and run VERY fast in short bursts. It’s recommended to stay AT LEAST 20 ft. away from them. Their jaws are powerful, as you know. I hope you will reassure us that you were using a long lens.
Kerri said,
Yikes! I definitely think you were close enough!
dutchbaby said,
I am so happy you are all still in one piece. If you were more than 20 feet away, then I am happy for you, the alligator and your lens. If you were much closer, yikes, I don’t even want to think about what could have happened.
Mojo,NC,USA said,
Definitely close enough! Don’t need you losing limbs in pursuit of the shot. There’s a limit to dedication after all.
But you sure did a bang up job capturing him. Wow.
