Macro Monday Sand Dollar

IMG_5489

This tiny sand dollar survived a trip from Maine last year and has managed to survive being tossed from place to place awaiting its moment to shine. I’m really bad about actually taking photos of objects that are in my possession. My son has learned not to eat a heart shaped doughnut (or walmart cupcake) that has been sitting around for a while – it may take me a year to finally get to it. lol

So this little sand dollar has been very tolerant of my procrastination. Now that I’ve recorded it it will probably crumble. It’s less than the size of a quarter – very small!

I’m amazed that the dust from its journeys shows up!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that small. Even tiny, it has a lot of detail on it!

So pretty! I love that you’ve saved it all this time. And if I were around, any cupcakes or donuts would not await your lens! Yes, I’ve written about food today. I can hardly believe I’m coveting your imaginary cupcakes and donuts after the day we had!

I love tiny sand dollars! I’ve collected a few precious ones myself! This reminds me of a beautiful passage in one of Pat Conroy’s books (I believe it was “Lords of Discipline”) where two characters took long walks on the beach vying to find the smallest sand dollar of the day.

You’ve inspired me to photograph my sand dollars.

Wonderful shots Lisa!
I hope it doesn’t crumble but if it does make sure to take photos of the little doves inside. They are probably very tiny -perfect macro subjects. :)

I don’t know what a “Sand Dollar” is, it looks pretty small because I first thought it was a pancake (with dust)) !

Many thanks

Hi Lisa! I am always amazed seeing sand dollars close-up – and your photos make it much easier than using my own eyeballs these days! I posted a picture of live starfishes today. Couldn’t get in quite so close but they are so interesting to me. (still got that macro lens on my wish list :) PS – I’ve started a new blog… keeping Life in Short Lane, but thought The Travel Belles suited Macro Monday better!

Simple, yet elegant in that simplicity. I like the red background in the first two shots and the detail (including the dust) in the last. Welcome to the world of finding dust when you greatly enlarge as in scanning a 35mm frame.

Sandcastle Momma said,

You can preserve it by dipping it in a mixture of white glue and water. Thin the glue with water until the mixture is thin enough to drip off after you dip the sanddollar. Put it on wax paper (so it won’t stick) to dry.
It will still be fragile but not as much so. You can also redip it a few times to give it even more of a protective coating.

As for the dust – DON’T WASH IT! As soon as it gets wet it will crumble like a cookie. Use a small paint brush and try to brush as much dust off as possible before you dip it in the glue mixture.

The good news is that if it does break you’ll be left with the beautiful little doves that live inside.

I’ve never managed to find one of these in one piece. Close, but not quite. I love the ultra-tight detail shot, it almost looks like stitching of some kind. Amazing work.

That is really cool! Have you ever broken one open and looked at the little “doves” inside? There are little pieces of shell inside that do look like dove’s wings.
