Not sure if these urchin are dead or alive. But my son is good at finding them.
Dead or alive?
Spying on boats
The Laughing Gull and Me
I was happy to find some Laughing Gulls at the beach, their sound always cracks me up (we had them in Corpus Christi when we lived there), such funny birds!
But I didn’t know what this little guy was. I had to buy a Florida Birds book so I could figure some of my mysteries out. I think this is a Spotted Sandpiper.
He searched the beach for food. The sun kept going behind clouds, shadows, sun, ugh!
He amazed me that he just strutted right by, allowing me to snap some photos. I think he looks like a great crane, like a huge regal bird, but check this out. . .
I snapped this just to remember his size. He’s not huge at all, he’s smaller than the laughing gull! According to my book the gull is 16-17″ tall with up to a 3.5′ wingspan! Impressive!
Macro Monday Whatnots
Just a few odds and ends found on a beach near Jacksonville. The morning lighting seemed to be perfect to bring out the colors. Ahhhh.
I found these in a couple of spots but have no clue what made the little sand balls.
I think the sand in the shell looks like snow, but it wasn’t, lol.
Macro Monday is easy to play, snap a macro (or any close-up) photo, post it on your blog and come back here and sign MckLinky. Don’t forget to visit each other.
Southern Cemeteries
Of course we stopped in a few cemeteries along our route. This one was a very interesting place, the only one on Tybee Island, Georgia.
I was inthralled with the palms as much as the cemetery, lol. I just love these huge trees!
Such cool “bark”!
See, the palm was in the cemetery, lol.
A very interesting place, with an interesting history.
Another small cemetery we explored featured this indian.
And a few Confederate Soldiers.
I found all these numbered markers together intriguing – cremated remains?
Some very busy ants!
The third cemetery I’m sharing is in Florida, near Jacksonville, but it had so much Spanish Moss that I felt like I was still in Georgia. Isn’t this trunk cool?!
See what I mean?
Such beautiful places, full of history.
An Egret eating breakfast
Thanx to Kayleen for helping to identify this fellow as a Reddish Egret!
I saw a plethora of birds on our trip to Florida – many I had never seen before and most very accommodating. But this fellow was the first in the parade of birds so I thought he deserved a post of his own. He strutted down the beach and let me snap away – it was early morning, light not the best, kind of cloudy. I believe he’s a type of Heron, but not sure which kind?
Pelicans flew over as we left this beach. I did see more of them, and closer, but we’ll get to them eventually. I hope you like birds, I have a buttload of them to share, lol.
America’s Smallest Post Office
I’m managing to get the whole Mac thing figured out and I love my MacBook! I’m feverishly working on the photos, and am anxious to share them all – find myself bouncing around, but I don’t figure it really matters if I show things in any certain order. . .
So here we have the Ochopee Post Office, aka the smallest post office in the United States. We stumbled upon it while zipping to Big Cypress National Preserve, in Florida. As you can see, it’s still in use! Even if the guy has to stand outside of the door to use the building – it’s even smaller than the smallest church, lol.
